Bilingual Education Certification Pathway: Additional Classroom Teaching Extension program

Overview of Requirements

  • 6 courses (EDU 5130, 5252, 5253, 5255, 5250, and 5256)
  • Bilingual Education Assessments (BEA) – NYSTCE
    • This should be taken as soon as possible.
  • DASA Workshop and other mandated NYS Workshops (add to your TEACH account before you apply for certification)
  • Prior certification in a content area which includes math, science, social studies and ELA, special education, childhood, early childhood.
    • Please note: The bilingual extension cannot be added to a language (Spanish, French) or ESOL.

Individual Pathway to Bilingual Extension Certificate Courses (18 credits):

  • EDU 5130 Meeting the Needs of Culturally Diverse Students in Inclusive Classrooms in Birth-Grade 2, Childhood 1-6 and Adolescence 7-12
  • EDU 5250 Teaching Literacy in the Native Language: Strengthening the Connection Between Languages
  • EDU 5252 Introduction to Linguistics for TESOL And Bilingual Education Professionals
  • EDU 5253 Second Language Acquisition, TESOL, And Bilingual Education: Theory and Practice
  • EDU 5255 Interdisciplinary Teaching Methods and English Language Arts For PK-12 Bilingual English Language Learners
  • EDU 5256 PK-12 TESOL and Bilingual Teaching Practices and Assessment In The Content Areas

Higher Education Partners

RTC Institute partners with colleges and universities to bring high quality, convenient, graduate courses and programs to educators. The college and university partners define all application, matriculation, course, and graduation requirements, and grant graduate credit. RTC Institute serves as the local sponsoring partner for these courses and programs by bringing the courses and programs to local sites. RTC Institute cannot grant graduate credit or degrees.
